Applying for electric service and meter installation is a significant step in ensuring the functionality and safety of any residential or commercial property. The PECO Service and Meter Application form, M-24175, revised as of May 2018, serves as a comprehensive guide for applicants to request new services, modifications, or reinstatements of electrical supply. This document outlines the step-by-step process for submitting an application, starting with identifying the appropriate PECO regional office for the service location and detailing the requirements for customer information, including name, address, and identification numbers. It also specifies the necessity for electricians or contractors to provide their details and the demand for tax identification numbers. The form further delves into the technical aspects of the service required, such as the type of request, service characteristics, meter information, and details about the load characteristics and motor information if applicable. Additional sections request information on current construction status, expected service commencement dates, and whether specialized metering will be used. It emphasizes the importance of compliance with PECO Electric Service Requirements, the potential need for a credit application for new customers, and the protocol for demolition requests. This detailed application process ensures that all necessary information is collected to facilitate a smooth and efficient service setup, catering to both the immediate needs and future demands of the applicant’s electrical service.

Understanding Peco Service And Meter Application

What is the purpose of the PECO Service And Meter Application Form?

The PECO Service and Meter Application form is designed for customers seeking to establish or alter electric service and meter setups. This includes new connections, service upgrades, load increases or decreases, temporary services, and demolitions among other requests. The form gathers necessary details to process these requests effectively, ensuring compliance with PECO's Electric Service Requirements and facilitating proper coordination for installation or changes.

How can I submit the PECO Service And Meter Application Form?

The completed form can be submitted to the PECO regional office corresponding to the location where the service is required. Each region has its specific contact information, including mailing and fax details. It's essential to fill out the form with accurate and complete information to avoid processing delays.

What information is required when filling out the form?

Applicants must provide a comprehensive range of information, including the customer's name, service and billing addresses, Tax Identification or Social Security Number, the type of service requested, details about service characteristics (such as phase, volts, and wires), and specific information regarding the new or additional load. The application also requires details about the construction status, heating/air conditioning specifications, motor information, and any comments or diagrams that might support the request.

Is a customer’s Social Security Number or Driver’s License Number mandatory for the application?

Yes, either the customer's Social Security Number or Driver's License Number is required when completing the application. This information helps in verifying the identity of the customer and assists in the processing of the application.

Can I specify a desired date for service installation?

While the form allows you to indicate a preferred date for service initiation, it encourages avoiding the term "as soon as possible." Providing a specific desired date assists PECO in scheduling the work accordingly, though actual installation dates will depend on PECO’s assessment and workload.

What should I do if I need to request the removal of electric or gas facilities due to demolition?

If demolition of a building is planned and requires PECO to remove electric or gas facilities, it's crucial to call 8-1-1 for a PA ONE CALL demolition request. This ensures that all necessary precautions and arrangements are made safely and in compliance with legal and utility regulations.

What happens if the form is incomplete?

Incomplete forms may result in delays in processing your request. To ensure smooth and efficient handling, double-check that all required fields are filled out and that any necessary supplemental information, such as site plans or diagrams, is provided.

What if I have never had PECO service or it's been more than 60 days?

Customers who have not had PECO service within the last 60 days must complete a credit application and agreement. This step is necessary to establish your account and determine the terms of service before processing any requests for connection or changes.

How long does PECO take to respond to a service and meter application?

The response time for a service and meter application can vary depending on the complexity of the request, the completeness of the application, and PECO's current workload. The company endeavors to process requests promptly, but it reserves the right to cancel a request if no further communication is received from the customer within 90 days of PECO's response date.

Common mistakes

Filling out the PECO Service and Meter Application form requires attention to detail to ensure accuracy and avoid delays in processing. However, some common mistakes often occur during this process. One frequent error is not selecting the correct regional office where the service is requested, as specified in section A. This simple step is crucial for ensuring the application reaches the right destination for processing.

Another common issue is incomplete or incorrect information in sections B and C, where applicants must provide their name, service location, and customer billing address or account number. Failing to include a driver's license number or social security number, as now required, can also lead to delays. It’s important to double-check these fields for accuracy and completeness.

Section D, which requires details about the electrician or contractor, including the Tax Identification number, is another area where mistakes are made. Applicants sometimes forget to indicate where the reply should be sent or neglect to include the desired date for the reply, missing crucial communication from PECO.

In section E, specifying the current construction status and the requested date for PECO service to begin is often overlooked. Using vague terms like "as soon as possible" instead of providing a specific date can complicate scheduling and planning.

From sections F through J, applicants must detail the type of request, service, service characteristics, meter information, and heating/air conditioning specifications. Errors or omissions in these sections can lead to improper service setup. Additionally, failing to complete the table concerning load characteristics (section K) and motor information (section L) with accurate data can result in incorrect service provision that doesn’t meet the customer’s actual needs.

When compensated metering is applicable, as mentioned in section M, not indicating the totalizer and general load (KW) can lead to billing and service discrepancies. Similarly, leaving additional comments (section N) or the largest motor specifications (section L) blank when there are pertinent details to share can hinder PECO’s ability to provide the most appropriate service.

Last but certainly not least, one of the most critical mistakes is not signing and dating the application (section O). Without a signature, the application is considered incomplete and cannot be processed. Ensuring that all sections of the form are carefully reviewed and accurately filled out is essential for a smooth submission process.

Documents used along the form

When submitting the PECO Service And Meter Application form, several other documents and forms are commonly required to ensure a comprehensive and compliant application process. These additional documents help in understanding the specifics of the electrical service required and in verifying the applicant's details. Below is a list and brief description of these commonly used forms and documents:

  • Site Plan: This detailed drawing showcases the overall layout of the construction site, including the location of the building and any external utilities. It is necessary for understanding how electricity will be distributed throughout the property.
  • Single Line Diagram: Essential for electrical systems, this diagram provides a simplified overview of the main components of the electric service, including meter setup and connection points, making it easier for PECO to understand the electrical needs.
  • Substation Arrangement: For larger projects requiring high voltage or special configurations, this document gives details about the planned substation setup, including its location and the manner in which it will connect to PECO’s network.
  • Underwriter's Certificate: This certification, obtained after an inspection, proves that the electrical installation meets all safety standards and regulations. It’s required for activating the service.
  • Credit Application and Agreement: If the customer has not had PECO service in the past 60 days, this document is necessary to evaluate creditworthiness and outline the terms of service billing.
  • Proof of Identity: A copy of a government-issued ID (such as a driver's license or passport) may be required to verify the identity of the person requesting the service, especially when the service location is different from the billing address.

Together with the PECO Service And Meter Application, these documents form a complete application package, ensuring that the electric service setup process proceeds smoothly and efficiently. It’s important for applicants to provide accurate and detailed information to avoid delays in the process.

Similar forms

Similar to the PECO Service And Meter Application form, a Utility Connection Request form is used when a customer seeks to establish a new utility connection or make changes to an existing one. This document typically requires the customer's personal information, the service address, and specifics about the type of service needed, such as water, gas, or electricity. Just like in the PECO form, applicants might need to specify the desired date for service initiation, detail the technical requirements of their installation, and possibly submit site plans or schematics for review. Both forms facilitate the logistical and technical arrangements necessary to ensure that utility services are appropriately connected and configured according to the customer's needs and site specifications.

A Building Permit Application shares similarities with the PECO Service And Meter Application form in that both are integral to the process of starting new construction or renovation projects. Building permits are required to ensure that all constructions comply with local zoning laws, building codes, and safety standards. Applicants must provide detailed information about the project, including location, owner details, contractor information, and the scope of work. Like the PECO application, this process is crucial for coordinating with local utilities and regulatory bodies to secure necessary approvals and inspections before commencing work, albeit addressing a broader range of construction activities.

An Electrical Service Upgrade Request form is another document closely aligned with the PECO application. This form is specifically used when a property owner or developer needs to increase the electrical capacity of a building to accommodate additional load requirements. The document requires detailed information about the existing service, the requested service capacity, and the purpose of the upgrade, mirroring sections of the PECO form dedicated to service characteristics and load details. Submission of this request initiates a review process by the utility provider to assess the feasibility and determine the modifications needed to deliver the requested service upgrade.

The Contractor's Request for Utility Location form is used by contractors before starting any construction or excavation work to ensure that no utility lines are damaged in the process. While it focuses on identifying and marking existing utility lines rather than establishing new service, it shares with the PECO form the necessity for detailed site information, project descriptions, and communication between contractors and utility providers. Accurate completion of this form helps prevent service disruptions and ensures safety by avoiding accidental damage to underground utilities, highlighting the interplay between construction activities and utility service management.

Finally, a Temporary Construction Service Request form is akin to the PECO application, specifically in scenarios where temporary electrical service is needed on a construction site before the permanent service is established. This document requires information similar to what is found in the PECO form, including details about the project location, the expected duration of the need for temporary service, and the specifics of the required electrical setup. Both forms facilitate the provision of electrical services tailored to the developmental stage of a project, ensuring contractors have the power needed to complete construction activities efficiently.

Dos and Don'ts

When it comes to filling out the PECO Service and Meter Application form, paying attention to detail is crucial for a smooth process. Here are some important dos and don’ts that can help guide you through the application without any hitches.

Do:
  • Read the instructions carefully before starting the application. They provide a valuable framework for how to proceed and ensure your application is correctly filled out.
  • Locate the correct PECO regional office for your service area. This ensures your application goes to the right place, avoiding unnecessary delays.
  • Complete all required fields with accurate information, including your name, service location, and customer billing address or account number.
  • Provide your driver’s license number or social security number, as this is now a necessary piece of information for the application.
  • Sign and date the application before submission. An unsigned application is incomplete and will result in processing delays.
Don't:
  • Skip providing a detailed description of work if applicable. Including a single-line diagram and substation arrangement can be crucial for specific requests.
  • Forget to include any enclosures required with your application, such as site plans, a single-line diagram, or a substation arrangement. Missing documents can lead to a delay in processing your request.

By following these guidelines, you’ll ensure your PECO Service and Meter Application is properly filled out and submitted, paving the way for a smoother process and quicker approval.

Misconceptions

When completing the PECO Service and Meter Application form, applicants often navigate through misconceptions that can lead to confusion and delays in processing. Understanding these misunderstandings is crucial for accurately completing the form and ensuring a smooth application process.

  • Personal Identification Numbers are Optional: A prevalent misconception is that providing a Customer's Driver's License Number or Social Security Number is optional. However, this information is now a requirement for the application process to help in verifying the identity of the applicant and ensuring accurate billing and service setup.
  • Site Plan Inclusion is Only for Commercial Properties: Another misunderstanding revolves around the necessity of including a site plan with the application. Applicants sometimes believe this is required only for commercial properties. In truth, all types of service requests, be it residential or commercial, need to include a site plan. This document is essential for PECO to understand the precise layout and service needs of the property.
  • All Service Voltages are Available Everywhere: Applicants often assume that any service voltage listed on the form is available for their location. This is not the case, as not all service voltages are accessible in all areas. It's crucial to obtain information regarding service availability and meter location from the company before proceeding with any wiring or purchasing of electrical equipment to avoid any compatibility issues.
  • Immediate Service Connections Can Be Requested: Many applicants believe that indicating "as soon as possible" for the service date will expedite the connection process. The application form advises against using this phrase and encourages applicants to provide a specific date when the service is requested. This enables proper scheduling and ensures that PECO can efficiently plan the connection process.

Correcting these misconceptions helps applicants in preparing their application more accurately, leading to a smoother process in obtaining electric service. It emphasizes the importance of carefully reviewing and complying with the instructions provided by PECO to avoid unnecessary delays or complications.

Key takeaways

When managing the Peco Service And Meter Application process, understanding and accurately completing the form is crucial for a prompt and smooth service setup. Here are four key takeaways to guide you through the process:
